Supersoft X-ray Sources in M31
We report on luminous supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs) in M31. In a survey which was most sensitive to soft sources in four 8×8 regions covered by Chandra’s ACIS-S S3 CCD, we find 33 SSSs that appear to belong to M31. Two of these were first identified as SSSs through ROSAT observations. Two SSSs may be identified with symbiotics, and 2 with supernova remnants. SSSs in the disk are clustered near...
متن کاملPoint Sources of GeV Gamma - Rays
A catalog of gamma-ray sources based on photons with energies greater than 1 GeV has been developed from observations taken by the EGRET instrument o f the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The data are taken from the 4.5 years of observation available in the public data archive. We emphasize sources which are detected using the entire database without regard to any possible transient o r v ariabl...
متن کاملBroad band X–ray spectra of M31 sources with BeppoSAX
We present the first spectral study of the X–ray emitting stellar sources in M31 in the energy band from ∼ 0.1 to 10 keV. We find that the globular cluster sources have spectral characteristics consistent with those of the Milky Way object, namely that the spectrum can be described by a thermal model with ∼ 6–20 keV from ∼ 2 to 10 keV. Evidence of high absorption in some of these sources is mos...
متن کاملThe M31 population of supersoft sources
The 1991 ROSAT PSPC M31 X-ray point source catalog has been screened in order to set up a sample of candidate supersoft sources in this galaxy, additional to the 16 supersoft sources already known in M31 (Supper et al. 1997). Selection criteria used were based on hardness ratios (“X-ray colors”), as developed in an earlier paper (Kahabka 1998). An additional criterion to be fulfilled was that t...
متن کاملSupersoft X-ray Sources in M31: I. a Chandra Survey and an Extension to Quasisoft Sources
We report on very soft X-ray sources (VSSs) in M31. In a survey which was most sensitive to soft sources in four 8 × 8 regions covered by Chandra’s ACIS-S S3 CCD, we find 33 VSSs that appear to belong to M31. Fifteen VSSs have spectral characteristics mirroring the supersoft X-ray sources studied in the Magellanic Cloud and Milky Way (k Te f f ≤ 100 eV); we therefore call these “classical” supe...
